2. Mahatmas - New Bhaktacharitras Each Month

India is the holy land with so many bhaktas (devotees). When we go through the Indian history, there must be a bhakta in every period. That is the greatness of this sacred land. Bhaktas are the role model for all the bonded souls. They enjoy their life in a perfect way. Bhaktas surrender themselves to the Lotus feet of Lord. By hearing or reading bhaktas' divine story, the bonded soul is enlightened to come out of the worldwide bondages.

Radhekrishna! Sincere chanting and listening to the great stories of devotees will surely give a peace of mind to everybody, even in this 21st century. So many people think that listening to the devotee's stories is a waste of time and there is no benefit at all. If somebody wants to realize the power of bagawan, first of all they must listen bhaktha charithram [stories of devotees]. There are so many advantages in listening to baktha charithram.

Bharath is a very special land and contained within it are sacred places and rivers. Devotees born in this sacred Bharath ensure that they propagate bhakti in all corners of the country. This is the precise reason why the fragrance of bhakti can be felt all around our country. Thirumangai Azhwar was visiting all the sacred places around this country. Whilst on pilgrimage around the country he visited the sacred town of Srirangam.

"vimaanam praNavaakaaram vEdhaSrungam mahaadhbhutham
SrirangaSaayee bhagavaan praNavaarththa prakaasaka:"

Those who are constantly enjoying the Lord's past times and his divine leelas are considered to be true devotees. Every moment the Lord his playing and engaging his devotees.Humans, out of their attachment on wordily things and lack of love for the Lord tend to miss his leelas. In this world every moment crores of leelas are being executed by the Lord. Unless we realize god, we will neither enjoy these leelas nor be cognizant that the leelas are taking place. Since Lord Krishna gave Arjuna divine eyes, he was able to see and comprehend the multitude of leelas done by the Lord. The Lord continues to create, protect and destroy and to enjoy all his leelas humans need long life, sincerity and above all Guru's blessings.

Thirumangai azhwar everyday was able to enjoy numerous playful activities of the Lord and was immersed in them. Humans give importance to the words and actions of other humans and as a result move away from contemplating on the Lord. If someone curses or praises us then our minds forget the Lord and runs behind those words spoken to us and hence the mind suffers. We must surrender our minds to the Lord alone as He alone knows the true nature of our minds. Thirumangai azhwar surrendered his mind to the Lord and as a result Lord Ranganatha was always with the azhwar's actions. Lord's blessing is there for everyone and at every place. We will only be able to enjoy it depending on the sincerity and our faith in the Lord. The Lord proclaimed to the relatives of the construction workers drowned by the azhwar that the workers had attained the final blissful state as a result of the azhwar's action. The azhwar was overwhelmed by the Lord's grace and prayed to Him that he should never lose his sincerity and faith on the Lord at all times. Thus the azhwar despite kaliyuga (a dark age) enjoyed the blessings of the Lord and led a life without any fears or worries.

Tirumangai Azhwar

One day the azhwar was standing enjoying the Lord and Lord Ranganatha had asked the azhwar if he wanted anything. In these times when people are just happy to receive a fraction of the Lords blessings, the Lord in turn is asking the azhwar if he desired to experience any of his divine leelas. Such is the bhakthi of the azhwar that the Lord himself is asking the azhwar the kind of experience he is looking for. Ordinary mortals would have asked for a number of things but the azhwar with total devotion has asked the Lord to show his ten avataras or reincarnations. The Lord smiled and said that He would definitely oblige but requested the azhwar to make idol forms of all the ten avataras and establish them in Srirangam temple. That way not only the azhwar could enjoy but all future generations could enjoy the ten incarnations of the Lord. Even today one can find the idols of the ten forms of the Lord established by the Lord and such is the nature of intense devotion exhibited by Thirumangai azhwar

Everyday Parakalan (Thirumangai azhwar) was enjoying the Lord by singing and speaking his glory and was having very peaceful life. Every day we have to be in constant thought of the Lord and even in sleep we have to enjoy Him and that is what life is all about. Even in the azhwar's days the seasons , atheists and things that we see today existed but the azhwar was able to surmount all that and devote his life for the Lord.

Lord Renganatha

To be concluded next month.... RadheKrishna

3. Krishnam Vande Jagadhgurum - Extracts From The Holy Bhagawath Geetha

Radhekrishna.Hinduism is an ancient religion. All the things that have been spoken in Hindu religion can be applied in practical life. Although in 21st century till everyone can apply this in his or her daily life. The aim of Hindu religion is to provide total happiness to everyone at all times (or any point of time). The essence of Hinduism is told in "Bhagawad Gita". In order to realize what is said in Bhagawad Gita it is a compulsory (must) to have an unconditional faith on Bhagawad Gita. So many people have benefited in their lives because of the (by reading) shlokas of Bhagawad Gita. In Bhagawad Gita, Bhagawan Shri Krishna has told the way to lead a happy life in such an easy way that even a normal layman can easily understand. The slokas are so simple that anyone can understand and use it practically.

Humans should have unconditional faith on the Lord and the absence of it alone creates fear, confusion and the lack of belief in god. We must try to develop that unconditional faith and that is what Kulasekara azhwar proclaims in his ten verses. The azhwars starts his verse by declaring that the Lord should save him from all his troubles as He alone knows the source. The azhwar also asserts that despite His powers even if the Lord decide not to salvage him from troubles, he will never be able to run away from Him. If the child falls down then it is the responsibility of its mother to cuddle and bring the child to normalcy. If the mother decides to watch the whole episode, then also the child will come running towards the mother but never it will think of going to its neighbour's house. Similarly the azhwar concludes that he will run towards the Lord as He alone has the necessary strength to help him recover from his troubles.

People are leading a selfish life that makes them necessary to take care of their needs to sustain a living. The Lord is the only one who is leading a selfless life and hence He can take care of all the beings on this earth. The azhwar requests the Lord to take care of himself as he takes care of the rest of the life on this planet. But even if the Lord decides not to pay attention to the azhwar's plea, the azhwar has made a stubborn decision to not to let go of the Lord. The azhwars says that his mind, despite the rejection, will revolve around the Lord, meditating on His divine feet.

Kulashekara Azhwaar
If a nation undergoes a bad patch and is suffering, the people would stay put with the hope that things would change for the better. Similarly the azhwar is also hoping that the Lord will save him even if he rejects him upfront. Vithuvakottu is a town that is brimming with fragrant flowers and the azhwar is clinging on to the Lord of Vittuvakottu. If a child becomes unbearable in his/her pranks then the mother would give a few slaps and push the kid a bit as an outlet for her vexations. Despite the push the child will only come running towards his/her mother. Even if the child decides to take refuge in father's lap the constant cry for the mother to console the child will be there. Even if the child is consoled by everyone and unless the mother comes and cuddles the child with a note to behave properly in future, the child will never get satisfied. The azhwar uses this example of the child's behaviour and declares that he is attached to the Lord as a child to its mother.

A mother will undergo strict regimen during pregnancy to ensure that the child will have a normal growth in her womb. Also during the early days after birth when she is feeding the baby, she would ensure that her diet does not upset the baby. She would also go to the extent of taking medication to ensure free flow of milk for the newborn child. Hence the mother has great attachment , love and demonstrate anger as well.If the child is exceeding its limit in his/her behaviour, the mother would utmost give a few slaps or reprimand the child verbally. Despite the verbal censure or a few slaps, the child will still be attached to its mother and the azhwar uses it to show his relationship to the Lord.

When the Lord was visiting the forest (Dhandakaranyam during Rama's time) He came across many ascetics who were physically handicapped in one way or the other. The handicap was not a birth defect but due to some incidents later on in their lives. When the Lord enquires about it , the sages said that the rakshasas were giving them trouble and it is them who had left them devoid of the missing body parts. The Lord questions the sages that they could have easily destroyed the demons using their acquired powers. The sages reply that there is no need to take care of themselves. They are like new born babies who need attention for their day to day tasks including feeding and cleaning of their bodies. They further add that their duty stops with engaging in constant devotion towards the Lord and it is the Lords responsibility and duty to protect His children.

If we have ten rupees or a piece of gold , we have to protect the asset and the asset itself wont take any initiative. Just like the asset which leaves the ownership to the possessor, the sages had left the act of protecting them to the Lord. Hence they declare that it is the Lord's responsibility and duty to protect them from the demons and they need not worry about it. The Lord enquires them whether they had waited so long for Him to come? The sages were positive that the Lord will turn up one day and never had even an element of doubt as the Lord knows everything. The sages concluded that their bhakthi increased with every atrocity and declared to Rama that they have every confidence that He will save them. It is for this the Lord stood alone and destroyed all the demons and this episode is well documented in Srimad Ramayanam.

Hence we should not brood over losses and to never lose the Lord for anything. We can lose everything for the sake of gaining the Lord and there can never be any loss for anyone who is willing to go towards the Lord. Even if it is seemingly leading to a loss, the loss will be a gain as experienced later on. To be exact we must lead a life like Bheeshma and we will see that in our next episode

6. Samarpanam

parithraanaaya sadhoonaam vinasaya cha dhushkrutham

dharma sansthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge

Bhagawan takes avatar in each and every yuga mainly to safeguard the bhaktas and then to destroy the rakshasaas who trouble his bhaktas. So Bhagawan comes to this bhoomi from paramapadham just for the sake of his bhaktas. Hence we come to know that bhaktas are very important to the Lord. Whenever Bhagawan comes to rescue his bhaktas, the other fellow people also reap the benefits.........Our guruji amma gives high respect to all the bhaktas. Hence our Vedhanaadham's every issue will be dedicated to one bhakta. This issue we are dedicating to the one of the great devotee of the Lord namely - 'Sri Vaadiraja Tirtha '

Sri Vaadiraja Tirtha

The great bhaktha was born at Kumbhasi near Udipi in a village called Huvvina Kere in 1480 to Sri Ramacharya and Smt. Saraswathi.

The divine soul is considered to be a Rijuganastha , an avatar of god Latavya and one destined for the post of Brahma in the next kalpa.

The pious soul was taken by his guru Sri Vagisha thirtha as per his earlier orders that if a boy were born his parents would allow him to take the child and was duly given the holy robes of sanyasi and was renamed as 'SRI VADIRAJA THIRTHA'.

The great soul who travelled from Sethu to Himalachal and from East to West and wrote Thirthaprabhanda, which describes in minute detail of the each God as he visited during his pilgrimage.

The great devotee who climbed Tirumala hills on his knees and hands as the hill looked as if it was full of Saligramas. The Saligram garland worn by Lord Srinivasa was a humble offering made by Sri Vadirajar.

The great bhaktha in whose dream, Lord Hayagreeva appeared & requested him to accept the statue made by a sculptor who after several attempts could not make the cast of Vinayaga and instead only the idol of Hayagreeva holding a conch, a rosary,  a book and gnana mudra.

The learned soul who wrote philosophical commentaries like Sudha Tippani, Tatwaprakshika Tippani , Bhagavadgita Tippani , Mahabharata Tatparyanirnayatika and Tantrasara Teeka. Independent works were Guruvrata Deepika, Prameya sangraha , Yuktimallika , Sarasa Bharati Vilasa and Pashadamatha Khandana.

The great follower of Madhvacharya and his dwaita philosophy translated Mahabharata commentary into Kannada, and has composed numerous devotional songs in that same language.
